New Year’s Resolutions – A taste of life with diabetes

Did you make a new year’s resolution?

Many people start the new year off with one or more resolutions.  Mostly their resolutions focus on things like planning to lose weight, get more exercise, stop smoking or drinking too much alcohol, decrease stress or increase time with family and friends. (Interesting that they all focus on positively influencing the health of the body and mind!)

New-ResolutionsThe resolutions are made and the year starts off with a sense of excitement as plans are made to achieve a healthier you. All is going well. You pass the first week as the hurly burly of life plays out. Well intended commitment starts to waiver and before you know it goals are modified if not forgotten altogether.

This is a familiar scenario for people with diabetes who often experience a constant pressure to lead a healthier lifestyle.  Resolutions are set to “do better with my diabetes” at many points over the year; after (or before) a doctor’s appointment, when levels are high or too low for a period of time or after the scales reveal a greater increase in weight than expected. As food, exercise, stress and health checks are juggled, good intentions are easily cast away by the stress of trying to achieve the ‘new’ resolutions.

For those without diabetes, New Year’s resolutions provide a taste of the daily challenge of living a healthy life with diabetes.

As you continue to work towards achieving your own resolutions consider supporting someone in your life with diabetes to achieve their health goals.

You could:

  • Provide healthy food options when entertaining your friends and family with diabetes
  • Ask if you can do some regular exercise together as an exercise buddy
  • Call them from time-to-time to see how they are going

So … here’s to your New Year’s resolutions. May they result in a healthier life for you…and those in your life with diabetes. A happier year will be guaranteed as you both feel better and healthier versions of yourself!

Happy New Year!
