I am the mother of a young man with special needs who has type 1diabetes, what is the difference between an educator and a credentialed educator? How do you find a credentialed educator?

Hi Dale,
A Credentialled Diabetes Educator is a health professional who has achieved advanced education and clinical skills in order to fulfil the requirements for Credentialling by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association. This care is provided within the scope of practice of their original qualification. For example, I am a Registered Nurse and then worked within the Flinders Medical Centre Diabetes Education Unit here in South Australia which allowed me to gain my clinical experience (previously 1000 hours) after attending the Graduate Diploma of Diabetes Care and Education course at Flinders University to then become Credentialled.
A diabetes educator is an unregulated term and anyone, in theory can use the term. It may be a practice nurse providing a diabetes clinic or individual working within a service who is working towards their credentialling status. Hope that explains the difference for you and thank you for the question. regards Jayne
