EdHealth’s Diabetes 4 Disability (D4D) course is written for disability support workers providing diabetes support to people with a disability. The information in D4D is of a general nature. Every effort has been made to make sure the content is accurate at the time of writing but healthcare information and standards change and there may be times when there has been a change in evidence based practice, not yet reflected in the course. Everybody’s diabetes is different and their care and support needs to be individualised to address each person’s specific needs. The information presented in the D4D course, D4D App and associated information is provided on the understanding you discuss any changes to a client’s diabetes care support with your client’s doctor for him/her to decide if it is appropriate for your clients’ diabetes care/support.
All participants in the D4D course have their diabetes skills evaluated in the Online Skills Check (OSC) or Online Skills Session (OSS), by a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE). The employing organisation is expected to provide equipment for the support workers to use in the online sessions, which can be hired in packs of three from EdHealth Australia. Participants have the opportunity in these sessions to ask questions about the course, information and its application. Theoretical discussions will explore the application of the skills with your client, based on the information we have been provided about their care. These discussions are exploratory and any suggestions or information covered in the discussion will need to be discussed with the person’s doctor, prior to applying it in their support.
If an OSC or OSS is cancelled, and cannot be re-booked, full payment will be required when cancelled 24 hours or less from the time it was scheduled to begin, or if no staff log in for the session. This is an allowable billing by the National Disability Insurance Agency Pricing Arrangements and will be billed to the organisation if the client was not involved in the reason for the cancellation or no-show.
Most clients supported by disability support workers are NDIS participants. The NDIS Quality and Safety Commission has an expectation support workers will have quality diabetes training and advice that provides them with an understanding of:
D4D training is provided with the understanding each disability organisation seeks and gains the approval of each client’s doctor for a support worker model of diabetes care, after appropriate education and support is in place to do this safely and in a person-centred model of care. Additionally, it is EdHealth’s expectation participants will follow the advice provided in a client’s Diabetes Management Plan, which the NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Commission expects will be in place to guide the client’s diabetes support.
The employing organisation and staff are advised to discuss the application of information presented in the Course, or during discussions in the OSC or OSS, with your NDIS Participants’ medical practitioner or Credentialled Diabetes Educator.

Certificates are issued for the Modules each participant successfully passes after all components have been completed and quizzes passed. This includes the OSS and OSC. Certificates are forwarded to the disability organisation, not the individual, unless an individual has paid for the seat in the course themselves. It is then the responsibility of the organisation to pass on your certificates in a timely manner.
