ENDIA study call for participants
The ENDIA – environmental determinants of islet autoimmunity – Study aims to find the causes of type 1 diabetes (T1D). What makes ENDIA internationally unique is that babies are followed from the pregnancy into childhood to determine the protective and triggering factors influencing the development of the disease. This is a national observational study; there are no interventions and participation is low risk.
The ENDIA Study team are excited to announce a significant milestone in reaching over 700 participants enrolled across Australia; we’re passed half way! This means we still need another 700 to answer the question “what causes type 1 diabetes”.
Eligible family members include:
- Pregnant women living with type 1 diabetes
- Men with T1D whose partner is pregnant
- A child with T1D whose mum is pregnant
- Babies under six months of age whose mum, dad or sibling have T1D.
ENDIA has teams based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney and also has a Regional Participation Program so eligible families living with type 1 diabetes can contribute to this important research from anywhere in Australia. Men with type 1 diabetes who are expecting a baby are particularly encouraged to seek more information about participating as we have 56% mothers but only 26% fathers with type 1 diabetes in our study to date (the remainder are siblings).
