What do people with diabetes eat and not eat?

Congratulations on clicking on the link for your special gift from Jayne Lehmann, EdHealth Australia. This is an example of the low literacy handouts Jayne Lehmann produces for health professionals to use in their education of people with diabetes.

While the handout below doesn’t provide a comprehensive review of the recommended diet for a person with diabetes, it does provide a place to start a conversation with people who find it hard to read and understand their health information. This includes people with intellectual disability, refugees, people with English as a second language and anyone with low health literacy.

To download the handout:

  1. Right click on the image and save to your computer.
  2. Laminate a colour copy for education purposes.
  3. Photocopy black and white copies for people to take home.
  4. Use the handout to help people with diabetes to learn more about a healthy diet appropriate for people with diabetes. Very useful when people are newly diagnosed or require an update.
  5. This handout is also helpful to start conversations with people who have higher literacy levels as well.

See how you go with the handout. I would love to hear any feedback via the comments section below so others can learn from the way people are using the resource. Regards, Jayne Lehmann RN CDE.
