Diabetes 4 Disability Training

The Diabetes 4 Disability (D4D) course has been updated to provide even more flexibility to the individualisation of this support worker training. Recognising a one-size-fits-all training is not best practice, each group of support workers have their D4D course customised with lessons to match the needs of the person with a disability they support.

Lessons are matched to their type of diabetes, lifestyle management, other health risks, diabetes treatments and equipment creating person centred D4D training. โ€‹โ€‹

Knowledge and Skills Evaluation

Easy to listen to lessons are presented and narrated by EdHealth’s Director, Jayne Lehmann, to enhance learning and understanding, especially for participants with English as a second language.

Jayne shares a wealth of experience gained from her indepth understanding of disability support and 40 year career as a Registered Nurse Credentialled Diabetes Educator, to bring together the disability and health sides of diabetes support.

The online D4D course is accessible from anywhere in Australia, easy to connect to and navigate, with optional reading provided for those wanting more.

Practice Equipment Packs are delivered to provide the equipment and procedures participants need to learn the practical skills required for their client’s diabetes care support.

The Online Skills Check (OSC) is conducted by one of EdHealth’s RN Credentialled Diabetes Educators. We discuss information specific to the group’s client, based on their diabetes, disability, treatment and diabetes care recommendations to further customise each groups understanding of their client’s needs.

IT support is provided to keep participants on track with their online learning.

Course Content

Module 1: Diabetes Support

This module provides a foundation of understanding by explaining type of diabetes, how it is treated, ways to support lifestyle management of a healthy diet, being physically active and stress management. There is a lesson on diabetes tablets for those prescribed, including hypoglycaemia if their tablet poses this risk. To round off we cover the diabetes linked health conditions people with diabetes are at risk of developing and how to support ongoing screening and prevention strategies.

Module 2: Glucose Monitoring

Focused on glucose monitoring, participants learn how to accurately and safely Check, Think and Act on glucose levels for the improved diabetes health of their NDIS participant. Practice equipment is required during the Module to learn how to use the equipment.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

Continuous glucose monitoring is used by most people with type 1 diabetes (via NDSS) and some people with type 2 diabetes, as Assistive Technology (funded by NDIS). Training is required for support workers to insert sensors, use and maintain the device and understand the glucose number, arrow and patterns identifiable when the data is brought together into reports. These lessons are added, as required.

Module 3: Diabetes injectables

The National Diabetes Insurance Agency (NDIA) actively encourage the introduction of support worker models of care when a NDIS participant needs support to prepare, administer and/or self-inject subcutaneous diabetes injectables. This may include weekly injections of Ozempic (semaglutide) and Trulicity (dulaglutide), daily insulin or the emergency medication, GlucaGen HypoKit.

D4D training gives disability support organisations the confidence to embrace an enhanced scope of practice for their disability support workers. Modules cover the knowledge and skills required to build the capacity and confidence of support workers to enable them to safely give, or supervise, a sub-cutaneous insulin injection and manage all aspects of their diabetes injectable care, including the identification, treatment and prevention of hypoglycaemia. Our system addresses the NDIS High Intensity Skills Descriptors, with the option of EdHealth Australia also providing a comprehensive Diabetes Management Plan covering the individualised advice for the client’s support.

Re-usable insulin pens are also required by some people with diabetes. We can add in a lesson on these devices. The Novo Pen 6 is a Smart device and may be in place for its capacity to connect with other technology being used for your client.

GlucaGen HypoKit

The GlucaGen HypoKit is an emergency injectable medication support workers can learn to administer sub-cutaneously to treat severe hypoglycaemia in people on insulin or with metabolic conditions. Ambulance callout times have increased, creating a greater need for support workers to be trained to give this medication in the event of a severe hypoglycaemia event.
