It is common for people with diabetes and a cognitive disability to find it hard to:
- Buy their own food and cook healthy meals
- Check their own glucose levels
- Go to the doctor to talk about their diabetes
- Inject diabetes medications (Insulin, Ozempic and Trulicity), when prescribed.
People with a cognitive disability can have their support workers help them with their diabetes care, if the support is required, due to their disability. This support enables people with a cognitive disability to live a healthier life with diabetes.
Support workers need to be trained to safely support a client with their diabetes because their initial training does not include any knowledge or skills in diabetes support. The Diabetes 4 Disability (D4D) course is your one-stop training destination for all things diabetes and disability. Using a flexible format, the course can be customised to the training needs of each group of support workers. You will learn the knowledge and skills needed to safely support a client with their diabetes. This course adheres to the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) quality and safety and Practice Standard requirements for high intensity diabetes support.
How do I access the D4D course?
The D4D course has seats that are pre-purchased by a NDIS participant, disability organisation or individual. EdHealth Australia registers the participants doing the course and information is sent to the organization to distribute to course participants. Details are included to connect you to EdHealth Australia’s online Course or the D4D App. The App will enable you to do the course on your Smartphone, tablet or computer, once it has been launched. How long does the course take to do?
This depends on your English reading and computer skills, and any previous diabetes knowledge. We understand for many doing the D4D course, English is your second language. During the presentations, diabetes related words are explained, and information is presented in a format that is easy to understand. If you’re not sure about a word in the D4D lessons, try to look them up the definition online. Before you know it, you will have added a number of new words to your vocabulary!
Do I need to do a test to pass the D4D course?
We call them a quiz, not a test! A quiz is included at the end of each lesson in Module 1 and they are designed to help you to become familiar with the way we present our quizzes. They give you the opportunity to practice and learn the information for the end of Module quiz.
Each quiz has a pass mark of 80%, which can be re-taken as many times as you like. Check your answers and read the correct answer provided when you get a question wrong.
You must pass the Quiz at the end of the Module before you can go onto the next Module.
