Low literacy, or picture resources, are designed by EdHealth’s Director, Jayne Lehmann, to support NDIS participants to be more actively supported in their diabetes self-care.

Resources can be developed to support a person to do a specific task by breaking it down into the individual steps. Others can be designed for greater interaction. For example, stickers can be used on the resource to reward the achievement of each new step achieved. Stickers can also be used to ‘count’ how often the person does a task.

The resources suit people with:

  • Low literacy
  • Low health literacy
  • English as a second language
  • Hearing impairment or deafness

Created using Widgit Online, each resource is designed to address a particular need and is highly individualised. Each is created with a clear vision of the outcome for the NDIS participant. Clear and simple pictures and words create resources that are very effective at supporting a person to be more involved in their diabetes care.

What type of low literacy resources can EdHealth produce?

EdHealth has produced many different resources in their work with NDIS participants. It is one of the services that sets us apart from other services providing diabetes support.

Resources can be created to support:

  • Active involvement by the NDIS participant in the use of equipment to care for their diabetes e.g. glucose monitoring systems (meter, Libre and Dexcom G6), injections, food choices
  • Positivity charts – to build self-esteem and create opportunities for the NDIS participant and their circle of support to identify when a positive behaviour has been displayed to help with their diabetes
  • Working towards a goal with their diabetes care
  • To understand the impact of their food on their glucose levels
  • To provide support to problem solve
  • Reinforce positive choices in their diabetes care
  • Provide support for the support workers if they are less confident reading English

Support for positive behaviour

The resources are also very effective at modeling positive behaviour in relation to their diabetes. To create these resources, EdHealth’s Credentialled Diabetes Educators and diabetes educators work with the person providing a Positive Behaviour Management Plan. We aim to maintain consistency in behaviour support as another strategy to enable an individual to improve their diabetes management.
